Abstract |
Fully Depleted Silicon-on-Insulator (FD-SOI) transistors fabricated with a custom process in Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) were irradiated with X-rays using an Elekta Synergy radiotherapy linear accelerator. I-V curves of FD-SOI are sensitive to charges produced in the buried oxide (BOX) by ionizing radiation, so it is possible to use these devices as radiation dosimeters. In this work, we evaluated the use of thick BOX back-gate transistors for Total Ionizing Dose (TID) measurement using different bias conditions and we obtained a maximum sensitivity of 191 mV/Gy for devices operating in accumulation mode. |

Abstract |
We directly image individual vortex positions in nanocrystals in order to unveil the structural property that contributes to the depletion of the entropy jump entailed at the first-order transition. On reducing the nanocrystal size, the density of topological defects increases near the edges over a characteristic length. Within this “healing-length†distance from the sample edge, vortex rows tend to bend, while towards the center of the sample, the positional order of the vortex structure is what is expected for the Bragg-glass phase. This suggests that the healing length may be a key quantity to model confinement effects in the first-order transition of extremely layered vortex nanocrystals. |

Abstract |
The interrelation between heterogeneity and flux pinning is studied in Ba(Fe1−xCox )2As2 single crystals with widely varying Co content x.Magnetic Bitter decoration of the superconducting vortex ensemble in crystals with x = 0.075 and x = 0.1 reveals highly disordered vortex structures. The width of the Meissner belt bserved at the edges of the crystals, and above the surface steps formed by leaving, as well as the width of the intervortex distance distribution, indicate that the observed vortex ensemble is established at a temperature just below the critical temperature Tc. The vortex interaction energy and pinning force distributions extracted from the images strongly suggest that the vortex lattice disorder is attributable to strong pinning due to spatial fluctuations of Tc and of the superfluid density. Correlating the results with the critical current density ields a typical length scale of the relevant disorder of 40–60 nm. |

Abstract |
We study the field for the penetration of a first vortex, HP, for vortex matter nucleated in micron-sized samples with edges aligned along the nodal and antinodal directions of the d-wave superconducting order parameter of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8−δ. Here we present evidence that the HP for vortex matter nucleated in mesoscopic samples with edges parallel to the nodal direction is larger than for the antinodal case, ∼72% at low temperatures. This finding supports the theoretical proposal that surface Andreev bound states appearing in a sample with edges parallel to the nodal direction would produce an anomalous Meissner current that increases the Bean-Livingston barrier for vortex penetration. |

Abstract |
We study the onset of the irreversible magnetic behavior of vortex matter in micron-sized Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ single crystals by using silicon micro-oscillators. We find an irreversibility line appearing well below the thermodynamic Bragg-glass melting line at a magnetic field which increases both with increasing the sample radius and with decreasing the temperature, paradoxically implying the existence of a reversible vortex solid. We show that at this irreversibility line, the sample radius can be identified with the crossover length between the Larkin and the random-manifold regimes of the vortex-lattice transverse roughness. Our method thus allows to determine, as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field, the minimum size of a vortex system that can be collectively pinned, or the so-called three-dimensional weak collective pinning Larkin radius, in a direct way. |

Abstract |
We have used the high-Q mechanical-oscillator technique to probe the vortex-lattice structure in high-quality Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O single crystals over a wide range of magnetic fields (200 Oe to 40 kOe), and relative orientations θ between the magnetic field and the crystalline c^ axis. In addition to the large softening and dissipation peak previously observed and interpreted as due to flux-lattice melting, another distinctly different peak at higher temperatures is seen. The temperatures where the dissipation peaks take place are solely defined by the parallel component of the field cosθ, while the restoring force on the oscillator is due to both field components. We suggest that the two peaks are due to the softening of interplanar coupling at the low-temperature peak, and melting or depinning of the two-dimensional pancake vortices at the higher-temperature peak. |
