Title Photoinduced superconductivity and structural changes in high temperature superconducting films Type Journal Article
Year 1994 Publication (up) Applied Physics Letters Abbreviated Journal
Volume 64 Issue 5 Pages 652-654
Keywords Annealing; Electric conductivity measurement; Lighting; Oxygen; Praseodymium compounds; Quenching; Semiconducting films; Structure (composition); Superconductivity; Thermal effects; Thin films; Yttrium compounds; Contraction; Oxygen vacancy; Photoinduced superconductivity; Stoichiometry; Superconducting critical temperature; High temperature superconductors
Abstract The illumination of PryGd1-yBa2Cu 3Ox semiconducting and superconducting thin films increases their critical temperatures and decreases their normal state resistivities if and only if the films are oxygen deficient. Moreover, these changes are enhanced near the Pr-induced metal-insulator transition. Light also causes a contraction of the c-axis in YBa2Cu3Ox which is correlated with the observed photoinduced resistivity changes. These changes are similar to those observed when oxygen-deficient YBa 2Cu3Ox is enriched with oxygen or annealed at room temperature after quenching from high temperatures.

Title Evidence for a “brick wall” microstructure in epitaxial YBa 2Cu3Ox films Type Journal Article
Year 1994 Publication (up) Applied Physics Letters Abbreviated Journal
Volume 65 Issue 6 Pages 770-772
Keywords
Abstract We have measured the in-plane (ab plane) critical current density J c in sputtered, c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O x films as a function of the oxygen content x. The important reduction of Jc with decreasing x can be explained in terms of a “brick wall” microstructure, where the critical current density is dominated by the coupling strength (along the c axis) between the superconducting CuO 2 planes. Scanning tunneling microscopy images of the film surfaces are consistent with the presence of the brick wall structure, which apparently results from the overlap between terraces belonging to adjacent spiral-shaped islands.

Title Photoinduced enhancement of superconductivity Type Journal Article
Year 1992 Publication (up) Applied Physics Letters Abbreviated Journal Appl. Phys. Lett.
Volume 60 Issue 17 Pages 2159-2161
Keywords
Abstract We show clear and conclusive experimental evidence for the enhancement of superconductivity in GdBa2Cu3Ox and YBa 2Cu3Ox thin films by photoexcitation. Upon laser illumination the critical temperature increases while the resistivity of the material decreases. The relaxation back to the original state is very slow, of the order of days at room temperature. The existence of this effect opens the possibility of fabricating weak-link devices with in situ tunable superconducting characteristics.

Title Controlled preparation of oxygen deficient YBa2Cu 3Ox films Type Journal Article
Year 1992 Publication (up) Applied Physics Letters Abbreviated Journal
Volume 60 Issue 13 Pages 1627-1629

Abstract We describe a simple method based on the oxygen pressure-temperature phase diagram to prepare oxygen deficient YBa2Cu3Ox thin films. Systematic critical temperature and x-ray diffraction experiments clearly show that films with different oxygen contents (6.6?x?7) are obtained in a controlled, reproducible, and reversible way.

Title Etching of screw dislocations in YBa2Cu3O7 films with a scanning tunneling microscope Type Journal Article
Year 1992 Publication (up) Applied Physics Letters Abbreviated Journal
Volume 61 Issue 1 Pages 111-113
Keywords
Abstract We report on the systematic unrolling of screw dislocations with the scanning tunneling microscope at the surfaces of sputtered, c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7 films. The etching is dominated by field induced evaporation and not by mechanical milling of the surface. The process also enables the controlled drawing of nanometer scale grooves on the film surface.

Abstract We show through photoexcitation experiments carried out on YBa2Cu3Ox c-axis oriented films that photoinduced phenomena are not restricted to insulating samples. Superconducting films with critical temperatures varying between 2 K and 40 K show a clear enhancement of the superconducting transition after illumination. The increase in Tc is accompanied by a corresponding decrease in the resistivity ?, and an increase in the Hall coefficient RH, indicative of an increased carrier density. Furthermore, the carrier mobility is also affected by illumination.

Title YBa2Cu3Ox: A natural multilayer system with tunable anisotropy Type Journal Article
Year 1993 Publication (up) Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter Abbreviated Journal
Volume 5 Issue 33 A Pages
Keywords
Abstract The authors report on magnetoresistivity rho ab( theta ,H,T) measurements below Tc in YBa2Cu3Oxn films with differing oxygen content x. The observed variations in the angular and field dependence of rho ab with reduced x indicate a gradual dimensional crossover from an anisotropic 3D to a quasi-2D behaviour. The increasing anisotropy is related to a decrease of the coupling between the Cu2O2 bilayers when oxygen is removed from the Cu1Ox chain-planes.

Keywords photoconduction; Superconductivity; thin films; Copper oxides; Hall effect; Order disorder transitions; Radiation effects; Superconductivity; X ray analysis; Josephson coupling; Oxide superconductors; Yttrium barium cuprates; High temperature superconductors
Abstract The photoinduced enhancement of superconductivity in RBa2Cu3Ox (R=rare earth or yttrium) and PryR1-yBa2Cu3Ox was explored through temperature-dependent resistivity, Hall coefficient and mobility, and x-ray diffraction measurements. The increases in Tc are enhanced near the metal-insulator transition, although photoinduced changes always exist in oxygendeficient samples. Several explanations, including intergrain Josephson coupling, photoassisted oxygen ordering, and the trapping of photogenerated electrons in oxygen vacancies, are discussed.

Title Scaling of the irreversibility line in a low temperature superconducting oxide Type Journal Article
Year 1991 Publication (up) Physica C: Superconductivity Abbreviated Journal
Volume 175 Issue 1-2 Pages 197-201
Keywords
Abstract We have studied the critical field and irreversibility line on the magnetization of the ceramic oxide LiTi2O4. The irreversibility line scales with the critical field while the coherence length of the material changes by a factor of two. This universal behavior indicates that the origin of the irreversibility line does not depend on extrinsic factors and relies solely on the intrinsic superconducting parameters of the material.
