Abstract The superconducting transition temperature Tc and the temperature dependence of the upper critical field Hc2 were measured resistively on polycrystalline samples in the (Gd1−xPrx)Ba2Cu3O7−δ system. The experimental results reveal that Tc decreases monotonically with increasing x and vanishes at x≈0.49. Whereas Hc2 of a sample with x=0.10 has an almost linear temperature dependence and the superconducting transition broadens with increasing magnetic field, a sample with x=0.45 shows strong positive curvature in the Hc2 versus temperature curve and narrowing of the superconducting transition width with increasing magnetic field. Both phenomena observed in the sample with x=0.45 can be explained qualitatively in terms of a negative exchange interaction between the superconducting charge carriers and the Pr 4f electrons.

Title Low temperature specific heat of ThU Type Journal Article
Year 1972 Publication Solid State Communications Abbreviated Journal Solid State Commun.
Volume 10 Issue 5 Pages 459

Abstract The low temperature specific heat of the weakly magnetic system Image U has been measured in both the normal and superconducting states. U impurities are found to enhanve the normal state electronic specific heat coefficient γ at an unusually large rate of 4.85 ± 0.50 mJ/mole °K2 at. % U. The specific heat jump at the superconducting transition for an alloy of composition 0.075 at. % U follows the BCS law of corresponding states suggesting that the system Image U is essentially non-magnetic at superconducting temperatures.

Title Hybridization, hole localization and pair breaking in the high Tc superconducting system Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-δ Type Journal Article
Year 1992 Publication Journal of Alloys and Compounds Abbreviated Journal
Volume 181 Issue 1-2 Pages 135-152
Keywords
Abstract The Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-δ (δ ≈ 0.05) system has a rich temperature—praseodymium concentration (T-x) phase diagram consisting of a metal—insulator transition at xcr≈0.6, high Tc superconductivity in the metallic phase (0x≤xcr), and antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cu2+ and praseodymium ions at Néel temperatures TN(Cu) >TN(Cu)>TN(Pr) in the insulating phase (xcr≤x1). In the metallic phase, Tc decreases monotonically with x and vanishes near xcr, the dependence of Tc on pressure P and the upper critical field on temperature are both anomalous, and the low temperature specific heat can be resolved into a large γΓ contribution, reminiscent of heavy fermion behavior, and a spin Kondo anomaly; in the insulating phase, the values of TN(Pr) are anomalously large. These phenomena are briefly reviewed within the framework of a picture that is based on appreciable hybridization of the praseodymium localized 4f states and the CuO2 valence band states. A phenomenological model that incorporates the annihilation of mobile holes in the CuO2 planes and superconducting electron pair breaking by the praseodymium ions can describe Tc (x,P) for x ≤ 0.2.

Title Photoinduced enhancement of superconductivity Type Journal Article

Abstract We show clear and conclusive experimental evidence for the enhancement of superconductivity in GdBa2Cu3Ox and YBa 2Cu3Ox thin films by photoexcitation. Upon laser illumination the critical temperature increases while the resistivity of the material decreases. The relaxation back to the original state is very slow, of the order of days at room temperature. The existence of this effect opens the possibility of fabricating weak-link devices with in situ tunable superconducting characteristics.

Title Photoinduced changes in the transport properties of oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3Ox Type Journal Article

Volume 46 Issue 21 Pages 14249-14252
Keywords
Abstract We show that illumination of oxygen-deficient metallic YBa2Cu3Ox films produces a change in the Hall coefficient, an increase in the critical temperature, and a decrease in the electrical resistivity. These changes relax to equilibrium with characteristic times of the order of days, and are due to variations in both the carrier density and mobility. The relaxation times are of the same order of magnitude as the ones measured in nonilluminated oxygen-deficient films immediately after quenching.

Title Calorimetric study of the magnetization of Ce impurities in superconducting Th-Y and Th-Sc alloys Type Journal Article

Abstract Specific heat measurements are reported in detail for the Ce impurity in the superconducting matrix systems Th65Sc35Ce, Th80Y20Ce, and Th65Y35Ce. The variation of the specific heat jump DeltaC at the superconducting transition temperature T c is indicative of the magnetic nature of an impurity. For Th65Y35Ce a departure is found from the BCS law of corresponding states predicted for a nonmagnetic impurity. This departure is correlated with that observed for (La, Th)Ce systems and related to DeltaT c/n (initial slope of T c vs. n) and Ce effective size (implied by lattice parameter data).
