Abstract (up) It is shown that surface superconductivity can be used as a localized thermometer. Its application to the study of the thermal boundary resistance at a Pb-4He interface provides the first experimental evidence for the existence of a rapid temperature variation within microscopic distances from the surface.

Title Superconducting penetration depth in amorphous La70Cu30 Type Journal Article
Year 1981 Publication Physica B+C Abbreviated Journal
Volume 108B Issue Pages 1253-1254
Keywords
Abstract (up) It is shown that weak field penetration depth measurements can be used to determine the change in the normal and superconducting behaviour of amorphous samples, when heat-treated below the crystallization temperature. The results are used to discuss the validity of BCS-Gorkov relations, when applied to these materials.

Title Vortex softening: Origin of the second peak effect in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta Type Journal Article
Year 2001 Publication PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS Abbreviated Journal
Volume 87 Issue 5 Pages 057003
Keywords
Abstract (up) Magnetic hysteresis and transverse ac permeability measurements in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta allow a comparative analysis of the critical current with the elastic response of vortex structures, in equilibrium with their pinning potential, in the field and temperature region where the second peak is detected. This study provides strong evidence that the second peak has its origin in changes of the elastic equilibrium properties of the vortex structures.

Title Magnetic state modification induced by superconducting response in ferromagnet/superconductor Nb/Co superlattices Type Journal Article
Year 2008 Publication PHYSICAL REVIEW B Abbreviated Journal
Volume 77 Issue 10 Pages
Keywords
Abstract (up) Magnetization measurements in superconductor/ferromagnet Nb/Co superlattices show a complex behavior as a function of temperature, applied field, and sample history. Based on a simple model, it is shown that this behavior is due to an interplay between the superconductor magnetization temperature dependence, the ferromagnet magnetization time dependence, and the stray fields of both materials. It is also shown that the magnetic state of the Co layers is modified by the Nb superconducting response, implying that the problem of a superconductor/ferromagnetic heterogeneous sample has to be solved in a self-consistent manner.

Title Superconducting behavior of amorphous Zr70Cu30 Type Journal Article
Year 1983 Publication Solid State Communications Abbreviated Journal Solid State Commun.
Volume 47 Issue 11 Pages 885-887
Keywords
Abstract (up) Measurement of the Meissner penetration depth, λ(T) were made in amorphous Zr70Cu30 samples. The results indicate that this amorphous alloy behaves as a BCS superconductor with 2Δ(0)+45 degree rulekTc = 3.8, where Δ(0) is the superconducting energy gap at T=0 and Tc the critical temperature. It is also concluded that the low energy excitation, TLS, characteristics of amorphous material does not contribute to Tc.

Title Thermal Conductivity of Polycrystalline Zinc below 1 K Type Journal Article
Year 1967 Publication Review of Scientific Instruments Abbreviated Journal
Volume 38 Issue 1 Pages 87-92
Keywords
Abstract (up) Measurements of the thermal conductivity of samples of polycrystalline zinc of thickness 0.1 mm have been carried out between 0.12 and 0.9°K in the normal as well as in the superconducting state to investigate the usefulness of zinc as a thermal switch. The conductivity in the normal state shows a linear dependence on temperature. In the superconducting state it shows a behavior typical of electronic conductivity down to the lowest temperature measured. By applying a magnetic field between 40 and 5000 Oe, magnetoresistivity was also investigated and a strong dependence of thermal conductivity on field was found. Electrical resistivity measurements were performed in magnetic fields at liquid 4He temperatures. The resistivity was found to be independent of temperature for fields up to 9000 Oe. The effect of solder joints using Cd, Sn, In, Zn, and Wood's metal was also investigated, Cd giving the least resistance. The measurements show that zinc should be a useful thermal switch for temperatures below 0.1 and 0.2°K, though effect of a magnetic field on the normal conductivity must be carefully considered.

Title Comment on “strong vortex liquid correlation from multiterminal measurements on untwinned YBa2Cu3O7-? single crystals” Type Journal Article
Year 2002 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev Lett
Volume 88 Issue 13 Pages 1397031
Keywords
Abstract (up) Multiterminal measurements using experimental technique on twinned and untwinned YBa2Cu3O7-? crystals were presented. Inhomogeneous current distribution acting upon an uncorrelated vortex system showed that the dissipation of voltage at the top was larger than at the bottom. The behavior of the current voltage curves showed that the result Vtop = Vbot was a consequence of the limited voltage sensitivity.

Title Phase-coherence effects in vortex transport entropy Type Journal Article
Year 2008 Publication PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS Abbreviated Journal
Volume 101 Issue 11 Pages 117002
Keywords
Abstract (up) Nernst and electrical resistivity measurements in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-delta and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta with and without columnar defects show a distinctive thermodynamics of the respective liquid vortex matter. At a field-dependent high temperature region in the H-T phase diagram, the Nernst signal is independent of structural defects in both materials. At lower temperatures, in YBa2Cu3O7-delta, defects contribute only to the vortex mobility, and the transport entropy is that of a system of vortex lines. The transition to lower temperatures in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta has a different origin; the maximum in the Nernst signal when decreasing temperature is not associated with transport properties but with the entropy behavior of pancake vortices in the presence of structural defects.

Title Surface normal regions in superconducting Zr70Cu30 induced by thermal relaxation Type Journal Article
Year 1983 Publication Solid State Communications Abbreviated Journal Solid State Commun.

Abstract (up) Penetration depth measurements show that thermal heat treatment in amorphous Zr70Cu30 induces a normal region 5000 Å thick at the surface of ultrarapid quenched ribbons. Upper critical field measurements indicate that the new induced phase is a normal one while the rest of the sample remains as a homogeneous superconducting phase.
