Abstract |
The phase diagram of nonequilibrium, splat-cooled CuxLa1-x is interpreted by means of superconductive-transition and x-ray measurements. At the eutectic composition the material is shown to be in a highly disordered state. Measurements of dc resistance and ac susceptibility show that there are two different critical fields at the disordered concentration although there is a unique critical temperature. |

Abstract |
The pinning force density in ribbons of melt spun (a) Zr70Cu30 is found to obey the Larkin-Ovchinnikov theory of collective pinning by dislocation loops, and shows two and three dimensional behaviour, besides an intermediate regime not contemplated by the theory. The dimensional crossovers allow determination of the radius of action of the pinning forces which is shown to be proportional to the coherence length. Its magnitude is too small, which points to quantitative shortcomings of the current theory. |

Abstract |
The response of the vortex structure in ceramic samples of Bi4Ca2Sr4Cu4O16+y has been measured by means of a vibrating reed technique in magnetic fields below 0.2 T. An anomally in the response of the reed is seen at temperatures of around 30 to 40 K, well below the critical temperature, indicating a transition similar to that attributed to a melting of the Flux Line Lattice. There is a shift in the temperature at which the anomaly is detected when one increases the driving force on the reed, while the dissipation shows a maximum associated to the transition which scales with the square of the applied magnetic field. Comparison with magnetization measurements shows that there is non-zero critical current at the same temperature where the anomalous behaviour is detected with our technique. |

Abstract |
The transport current dissipation in the high Tc superconducting ceramic La1.85Sr0.15CuO4−δ shows a sin2 Θ voltage dependence where Θ is the angle between the transport current and the magnetic field. This result and the experimental evidence of an angle independent critical current cannot be explained by the conventional description of flux motion in homogeneous type II superconductors. The results are analyzed in the framework of a granular system where pinning is induced by the topological distribution of current flowing through a multiply connected medium. The dissipation in the superconducting state is found to be due to two additive contributions, one induced by the movement of magnetic flux and the other associated to dissipation in the Josephson junction. |

Abstract |
Transport measurements in the mixed state of oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7−δ single crystals using the flux transformer configuration show that the flux liquid changes with increasing anisotropy from strongly correlated to uncorrelated in the field direction. For intermediate coupling, the current inducing loss of vortex correlation has a maximum near the irreversibility temperature. Thus, an effective softening of vortex lines with decreasing temperature is detected. We propose a simple model that accounts for this behavior by including the effects of the pinning potential on the dynamics of vortices. |

Abstract |
Transport measurements in the mixed state of YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals using the “DC flux transformer” configuration show that the glass-liquid phase transition at the irreversibility line, TI(H), behaves as a three dimensional vortex phase transition. These results together with resistance measurements in the c direction show that the vortex correlation across the sample is destroyed at a temperature Tth(H), higher than TI(H). The sample thickness dependence of Tth(H) suggest that in the real thermodynamic phase transition (infinite sample), the long range correlation in the ab plane as well in the c direction is lost at the single temperature TI(H). |

Abstract |
Transport measurements in YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals using a modification of the d.c. flux transformer configuration are reported. We show that, for applied magnetic fields in the crystallographic c direction, the vortex correlation length in this direction is reduced to values smaller than the thickness of the sample. The reduction can be induced either by thermal disorder (linear response) or by flux cutting after the vortices reach a critical velocity (nonlinear response). The results show that, in the transition from a vortex-glass state to a vortex-liquid state, the vortices are effectively three dimensional in character. A two-dimensional regime is induced at higher temperatures well inside the reversibility region. |

Abstract |
Transport measurements using the dc flux transformer configuration together with c-axis resistance data in clean and twinned YBa2Cu3O7-δ single crystals show that vortices are localized by the twin-boundary potential. The results support the existence of a divergent tilt modulus [D. R. Nelson and V. M. Vinokur, Phys. Rev. B 48, 13 060 (1993)] in a liquid that freezes into a Bose glass |

Abstract |
Using an extensive scaling analysis of the transport properties in twinned YBa2Cu3O7-delta crystals we have experimentally found the predicted change in the universality class of the Bose-glass to liquid transition when the magnetic field is applied at small angles away from the direction of the correlated defects. The new dynamical critical exponent is s' = 1.1 +/- 0.3. |

Abstract |
We demonstrate experimentally that when the vortex correlation length in the liquid state becomes of the order of the sample thickness, size effects dominate the transport properties of the macroscopic vortex structures, implying a nonlocal response in the transformer experiments. |
