Abstract In this paper we present an analysis of the response of the vortices in YBa2Cu3O7-delta to different configurations of applied driving forces. The use of inhomogeneous current allows us to induce vortex cutting. We determine the maximum current injected in different electrical contact distributions which preserves vortex integrity, and we show that vortex cutting cannot be explained by a single vortex picture.   Abstract We have measured the critical currents in melt spun amorphous Zr70Cu30 and their evolution with heat treatment. We found that the pinning forces may be interpreted in terms of the Larkin-Ovchinnikov two dimensional collective pinning theory.

Abstract Transport measurements in the mixed state of oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7−δ single crystals using the flux transformer configuration show that the flux liquid changes with increasing anisotropy from strongly correlated to uncorrelated in the field direction. For intermediate coupling, the current inducing loss of vortex correlation has a maximum near the irreversibility temperature. Thus, an effective softening of vortex lines with decreasing temperature is detected. We propose a simple model that accounts for this behavior by including the effects of the pinning potential on the dynamics of vortices.

Abstract It has been shown1 that surface superconductivity can be used as a localized thermomether to study the temperature close to an interface through which heat is being transported. Knowledge of the temperature profile in the interface region provides evidence which any theory of the heat transport mechanism must take into account. For interfaces between pure lead and HeII we have previously found1 clear differences between extrapolated surface temperatures Tk. and Tm, measured within some 1000Ã… of the interface using a superconducting thermometer. (The reader is refered to ref.1 for details on the experimental method).

Abstract We have investigated the magnetization in thin (Y;Gd)Ba2Cu3O7-delta superconducting films in the 100 μs time scale. Magnetic moment was measured with a non-conventional technique that combines the use of a pulsed magnetic field and a synchronized pulsed laser. Both virgin and magnetically cycled samples were examined and results are described within Bean's critical state model.

Abstract It is shown that small variations of oxygen content in La1.8Sr0.2CuO4−δ can be used to control the reversible and irreversible magnetization temperature dependence of the superconducting state. A grain bond model is appropriate to describe the superconducting response of the ceramics. The study of the temperature dependence of the magnetization and the resistive transition temperature, in a slightly deoxygenated sample, show that the reversible superconducting state is strongly correlated to superconducting percolation. Deoxygenation has been shown to be an excellent technique to study the time evolution of metastable states induced by currents in the bonds and or in the grains. It is shown that superconducting grains are not correlated to ceramic grains.

Abstract The critical temperatureT cof Nb/Al multilayers decreases as the total sample thicknessd Tis decreased while the thickness of each Nb and Al layer is kept constant. To understand this behavior, models based on the proximity effect and on weak two-dimensional (2D) localization are employed. The latter uses a characteristic length, the thermal diffusion length, in relation tod Tto obtain 2D behavior and leads to a reasonable explanation ofT c(d T). It is also found that the slope atT c(d T) of the critical magnetic field perpendicular to the layers is independent ofd Twhen the Nb and Al layer thicknesses are kept constant. The angular dependence of the critical field is also measured.

Abstract The pinning force density in ribbons of melt spun (a) Zr70Cu30 is found to obey the Larkin-Ovchinnikov theory of collective pinning by dislocation loops, and shows two and three dimensional behaviour, besides an intermediate regime not contemplated by the theory. The dimensional crossovers allow determination of the radius of action of the pinning forces which is shown to be proportional to the coherence length. Its magnitude is too small, which points to quantitative shortcomings of the current theory.

Abstract We have measured the electrical resistivity, magnetic flux expulsion and critical fields of the new high temperature superconductor La1.8Sr0.2CuO4 after different heat treatments. Our data show that the complete flux expulsion in these samples is consistent with the presence of shielding currents induced in multiple connected structures. The magnetization measurements indicate that the lowest field where flux penetrates into the sample should not be taken to be the bulk Hcl. It is shown that the absolute value of the electrical resistivity and its temperature dependence are not correlated with the superconducting critical field and temperature. We discuss the behaviour of the superconducting parameters and their relation with the electrical resistivity.
