Title Amplification of the c-axis vortex correlation by twin-boundary pinning at the vortex liquid-solid phase transition Type Journal Article
Year 1996 Publication PHYSICAL REVIEW B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. B
Volume 53 Issue Pages R8895
Keywords
Abstract Transport measurements using the dc flux transformer configuration together with c-axis resistance data in clean and twinned YBa2Cu3O7-δ single crystals show that vortices are localized by the twin-boundary potential. The results support the existence of a divergent tilt modulus [D. R. Nelson and V. M. Vinokur, Phys. Rev. B 48, 13 060 (1993)] in a liquid that freezes into a Bose glass

Title Coincidence of Vortex-Lattice Melting and Loss of Vortex Correlation along the c Direction in Untwinned YBa2Cu3O7-δ Single Crystals Type Journal Article
Year 1996 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 76 Issue Pages 4034

Abstract We report on transport measurements using the dc flux transformer configuration in clean and twinned single crystals of YBa2Cu3O7-δ. We show that correlated disorder changes not only the order of the solid-liquid phase transition but also the nature of the vortices in the liquid state. In clean crystals, melting is shown to take place between a solid of vortex lines and a liquid with no correlation in the direction of the magnetic field.

Title Experimental evidence of a non-local resistivity in a vortex line liquid Type Journal Article
Year 1994 Publication Physica C: Superconductivity Abbreviated Journal Physica C
Volume 235-240 Issue 4 Pages 2581-2582
Keywords
Abstract We present transport measurements on YBCO single crystals in the vortex liquid regime using the DC flux transformer geometry. We show that the data are inconsistent with the material being an anisotropic, local conductor. The results provided evidence for non-local transport which indicate that there can be correlated vortex motion over macroscopic distances in this system. We have shown that this correlated vortex motion can be destroyed by either thermal fluctuations or the applications of large driving forces.

Title Long range correlations of the vortex structure in YBCO single crystals Type Journal Article

Abstract Transport measurements in the mixed state of YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals using the “DC flux transformer” configuration show that the glass-liquid phase transition at the irreversibility line, TI(H), behaves as a three dimensional vortex phase transition. These results together with resistance measurements in the c direction show that the vortex correlation across the sample is destroyed at a temperature Tth(H), higher than TI(H). The sample thickness dependence of Tth(H) suggest that in the real thermodynamic phase transition (infinite sample), the long range correlation in the ab plane as well in the c direction is lost at the single temperature TI(H).

Abstract We discuss the quench of the long range order in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the field, in the mixed state of BSCCO(2212) and YBCO(123) single crystals. The experimental data show that the high temperature vortex phase in both systems is an uncorrelated liquid phase in all directions.

Title Dynamic softening of vortex lines in YBa2Cu3O7−δ single crystals Type Journal Article
Year 1996 Publication Physica C: Superconductivity Abbreviated Journal Physica C
Volume 260 Issue 3-4 Pages 211-216
Keywords
Abstract Transport measurements in the mixed state of oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7−δ single crystals using the flux transformer configuration show that the flux liquid changes with increasing anisotropy from strongly correlated to uncorrelated in the field direction. For intermediate coupling, the current inducing loss of vortex correlation has a maximum near the irreversibility temperature. Thus, an effective softening of vortex lines with decreasing temperature is detected. We propose a simple model that accounts for this behavior by including the effects of the pinning potential on the dynamics of vortices.

Title Thermally induced change in the vortex dimensionality of YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals Type Journal Article
Year 1994 Publication Philosophical Magazine Part B Abbreviated Journal Philos. Mag. B
Volume 70 Issue 3 Pages 773 - 786
Keywords
Abstract Transport measurements in YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals using a modification of the d.c. flux transformer configuration are reported. We show that, for applied magnetic fields in the crystallographic c direction, the vortex correlation length in this direction is reduced to values smaller than the thickness of the sample. The reduction can be induced either by thermal disorder (linear response) or by flux cutting after the vortices reach a critical velocity (nonlinear response). The results show that, in the transition from a vortex-glass state to a vortex-liquid state, the vortices are effectively three dimensional in character. A two-dimensional regime is induced at higher temperatures well inside the reversibility region.

Title Thermal Conductivity of Polycrystalline Zinc below 1 K Type Journal Article
Year 1967 Publication Review of Scientific Instruments Abbreviated Journal
Volume 38 Issue 1 Pages 87-92
Keywords
Abstract Measurements of the thermal conductivity of samples of polycrystalline zinc of thickness 0.1 mm have been carried out between 0.12 and 0.9°K in the normal as well as in the superconducting state to investigate the usefulness of zinc as a thermal switch. The conductivity in the normal state shows a linear dependence on temperature. In the superconducting state it shows a behavior typical of electronic conductivity down to the lowest temperature measured. By applying a magnetic field between 40 and 5000 Oe, magnetoresistivity was also investigated and a strong dependence of thermal conductivity on field was found. Electrical resistivity measurements were performed in magnetic fields at liquid 4He temperatures. The resistivity was found to be independent of temperature for fields up to 9000 Oe. The effect of solder joints using Cd, Sn, In, Zn, and Wood's metal was also investigated, Cd giving the least resistance. The measurements show that zinc should be a useful thermal switch for temperatures below 0.1 and 0.2°K, though effect of a magnetic field on the normal conductivity must be carefully considered.
