Title Observation of two-dimensional vortices in Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox Type Journal Article
Year 1992 Publication Physical Review B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. B
Volume 46 Issue (up) 21 Pages 14238-14241
Keywords
Abstract We report transport measurements in the mixed state of single crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox using a modified version of the dc flux transformer geometry pioneered by Giaever in low-Tc materials. We find that over a wide range of the phase diagram the vortices are effectively two dimensional in character. Our results suggest that vortex cutting is an efficient process and that it is unlikely that the vortices are strongly entangled in this region of the phase diagram.

Title Weak interaction and matching conditions for replicas of vortex lattices Type Journal Article
Year 2000 Publication PHYSICAL REVIEW B Abbreviated Journal
Volume 62 Issue (up) 22 Pages 15183-15189
Keywords
Abstract We present experiments demonstrating the conditions under which weak interaction between replicas of vortex structures break their translational and rotational symmetry. The Fe clumps introduced by Bitter decorations of vortex structures are used to induce an extremely weak interaction fur subsequent vortex structures in low and high temperature superconducting crystals. The matching between the Fe pattern acid the vortex configuration require the structure to be prepared under quite stringent conditions: The field creating the structure has to be the same in magnitude although it can differ in orientation from that used for the preparation of the Fe pattern. The interaction between vortex replicas as represented by the Fe clumps of Bitter decorations makes it possible to differentiate the vortex nucleation and propagation mechanisms in low and high temperature superconductors.

Abstract Precise electrical resistivity measurements on very dilute non magnetic indium alloys show no doubt in a T 5 dependence on temperature between 1-4K and strong deviations from Matthiessen rule. Measurements of thermal resistivity show that the extrapolation method to obtain the data to H=0 is correct. Comparison of the results with recent theories is discussed.

Title Flux-cutting in YBa2Cu3O7-delta revisited Type Journal Article
Year 2002 Publication PHYSICA C-SUPERCONDUCTIVITY AND ITS APPLICATIONS Abbreviated Journal
Volume 371 Issue (up) 3 Pages 237-242
Keywords
Abstract In this paper we present an analysis of the response of the vortices in YBa2Cu3O7-delta to different configurations of applied driving forces. The use of inhomogeneous current allows us to induce vortex cutting. We determine the maximum current injected in different electrical contact distributions which preserves vortex integrity, and we show that vortex cutting cannot be explained by a single vortex picture. Abstract We have measured the critical currents in melt spun amorphous Zr70Cu30 and their evolution with heat treatment. We found that the pinning forces may be interpreted in terms of the Larkin-Ovchinnikov two dimensional collective pinning theory.

Title Thermally induced change in the vortex dimensionality of YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals Type Journal Article
Year 1994 Publication Philosophical Magazine Part B Abbreviated Journal Philos. Mag. B
Volume 70 Issue (up) 3 Pages 773 - 786
Keywords
Abstract Transport measurements in YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals using a modification of the d.c. flux transformer configuration are reported. We show that, for applied magnetic fields in the crystallographic c direction, the vortex correlation length in this direction is reduced to values smaller than the thickness of the sample. The reduction can be induced either by thermal disorder (linear response) or by flux cutting after the vortices reach a critical velocity (nonlinear response). The results show that, in the transition from a vortex-glass state to a vortex-liquid state, the vortices are effectively three dimensional in character. A two-dimensional regime is induced at higher temperatures well inside the reversibility region.

Title Sensitive Hot Wire Level Detector for Cryogenic Liquids Type Journal Article
Year 1969 Publication Review of Scientific Instruments Abbreviated Journal Rev. Sci. Instrum.
Volume 40 Issue (up) 3 Pages 483-486
Keywords
Abstract A very simple and highly sensitive ``hot wire'' type level detector to be used with cryogenic liquids is described. The hot filament is made of tungsten wire of about 4 µ diam. The tests on the sensor were made moving the filament in and out of the quiescent surfaces of liquid helium and nitrogen. The results showed 0.006 mm sensitivity in the determination of liquid helium level and 0.002 mm sensitivity in the case of liquid nitrogen level. The sensor is assembled in such a way that it can be used without special precautions during indefinite periods of time. For the case when the full capabilities of the sensor are not necessary, a simple circuit is presented.

Title Imaging the structure of the interface between symmetries interconnected by a discontinuous transition Type Journal Article
Year 2003 Publication Solid State Communications Abbreviated Journal Solid State Commun.
Volume 128 Issue (up) 3-4 Pages 51-55
Keywords
Abstract We have been able to observe with single particle resolution the interface between two structural symmetries that cannot be interconnected by a continuous transition. By means of an engineered 2D potential that pins the extremity of vortex strings a square symmetry was imposed at the surface of a 3D vortex solid. Using the Bitter decoration technique and on account of the continuous vortex symmetry, we visualize how the induced structure transforms along the vortex direction before changing into the expected hexagonal structure at a finite distance from the surface.
