Abstract |
Penetration depth measurements show that thermal heat treatment in amorphous Zr70Cu30 induces a normal region 5000 Å thick at the surface of ultrarapid quenched ribbons. Upper critical field measurements indicate that the new induced phase is a normal one while the rest of the sample remains as a homogeneous superconducting phase. |

Abstract |
It has been shown1 that surface superconductivity can be used as a localized thermomether to study the temperature close to an interface through which heat is being transported. Knowledge of the temperature profile in the interface region provides evidence which any theory of the heat transport mechanism must take into account. For interfaces between pure lead and HeII we have previously found1 clear differences between extrapolated surface temperatures Tk. and Tm, measured within some 1000Ã… of the interface using a superconducting thermometer. (The reader is refered to ref.1 for details on the experimental method). |

Abstract |
It is shown that surface superconductivity can be used as a localized thermometer. Its application to the study of the thermal boundary resistance at a Pb-4He interface provides the first experimental evidence for the existence of a rapid temperature variation within microscopic distances from the surface. |

Abstract |
When a type-I superconductor with a surface nucleation field Hc3(T)>Hc(T) (thermodynamic critical field) is thermally cycled in an axially applied magnetic field H0 between the temperatures T(Hc3) and about T(Hc), experiments show that the magnetization changes reversibly. The latter is diamagnetic near T(Hc3) but can be paramagnetic just above T(Hc). This behavior is explained by assuming that the fluxoid quantum number b is fixed at the transition from the normal to the superconducting state and retained at lower temperatures. The value of b is determined almost entirely by the flux at the transition which is enclosed by a contour located at a distance ξ1.7 from the surface inside the cylinder (ξ is the coherence length). The temperature variation of the order parameter f at the surface of the cylinder, the magnetization m, and the temperature at which m=0 for f≠0 are calculated for R>>ξ. Conservation of the fluxoid quantum number, while T is varied causes the two opposing surface currents to become imbalanced. This is the source of the observed para- and diamagnetism. |

Abstract |
We have measured the electrical resistivity, magnetic flux expulsion and critical fields of the new high temperature superconductor La1.8Sr0.2CuO4 after different heat treatments. Our data show that the complete flux expulsion in these samples is consistent with the presence of shielding currents induced in multiple connected structures. The magnetization measurements indicate that the lowest field where flux penetrates into the sample should not be taken to be the bulk Hcl. It is shown that the absolute value of the electrical resistivity and its temperature dependence are not correlated with the superconducting critical field and temperature. We discuss the behaviour of the superconducting parameters and their relation with the electrical resistivity. |

Abstract |
We study the effective profile of the pinning potential well in Bi$2$Sr$2$CaCu$_2$O8+δ single crystals using transverse ac magnetic susceptibility. The results show that the harmonic approximation for the potential well (linear regime) is valid up to vortex displacements $r\simeqξ$, where ξ, is the coherence length. In spite of this, it is necessary to induce displacements of the vortex structure much larger than ξ to depin it from its potential. This is shown to take place even in the single vortex limit. |

Abstract |
Measurements of the thermal conductivity of samples of polycrystalline zinc of thickness 0.1 mm have been carried out between 0.12 and 0.9°K in the normal as well as in the superconducting state to investigate the usefulness of zinc as a thermal switch. The conductivity in the normal state shows a linear dependence on temperature. In the superconducting state it shows a behavior typical of electronic conductivity down to the lowest temperature measured. By applying a magnetic field between 40 and 5000 Oe, magnetoresistivity was also investigated and a strong dependence of thermal conductivity on field was found. Electrical resistivity measurements were performed in magnetic fields at liquid 4He temperatures. The resistivity was found to be independent of temperature for fields up to 9000 Oe. The effect of solder joints using Cd, Sn, In, Zn, and Wood's metal was also investigated, Cd giving the least resistance. The measurements show that zinc should be a useful thermal switch for temperatures below 0.1 and 0.2°K, though effect of a magnetic field on the normal conductivity must be carefully considered. |

Abstract |
Transport measurements in YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals using a modification of the d.c. flux transformer configuration are reported. We show that, for applied magnetic fields in the crystallographic c direction, the vortex correlation length in this direction is reduced to values smaller than the thickness of the sample. The reduction can be induced either by thermal disorder (linear response) or by flux cutting after the vortices reach a critical velocity (nonlinear response). The results show that, in the transition from a vortex-glass state to a vortex-liquid state, the vortices are effectively three dimensional in character. A two-dimensional regime is induced at higher temperatures well inside the reversibility region. |

Abstract |
A pseudo dc flux transformer configuration shows that the flux flow in La2−xSrxCuO4 (x=0.075) and YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals is due to the movement of 3-D vortices across the sample. We show that the loss of c-axis long range vortex correlation is achieved either by thermal fluctuations or by an inhomogeneus Lorentz force acting on the vortices. |
