Abstract We have measured the persistent currents and their time relaxation in YBa2Cu3O7−x single crystals with correlated disorder introduced by irradiation with high-energy heavy-ions. For vortex density lower than the defect density, and for applied fields either parallel or nonparallel to the columnar defects, we find clear evidence of a pinning-crossover between a regime of strong individual pinning at low temperatures and a regime of weaker collective pinning at high temperatures. We explore the vortex dynamics above and below this crossover.

Abstract Hacemos una revisión de un conjunto de resultados experimentales y las conclusiones a las que ellos conducen sobre el comportamiento de las estructuras de vórtices en los superconductores de alta temperatura. Los experimentos de transporte con el uso del transformador de flujo de corriente continua permiten mostrar la riqueza del diagrama de fases del estado mixto y confirman el inusual comportamiento de esta nueva forma de materia condensada.

Aunque la bibliografía que se provee es limitada se incluyen diversos anexos que discuten y aclaran para el que no es especialista algunos conceptos que, aunque clásicos, no suelen discutirse bajo el punto de vista que aquí se presenta.

Abstract The vortex phase diagram in single crystalline La1.85Sr0.075CuO4 has been studied using an AC-susceptibility technique. A peak in the out-of-phase (x?) component of the susceptibility indicates a transition from a pinned flux lattice (FLL) to an unpinned one. This peak is frequency dependent for all the values of the magnetic field measured (0.01 to 4 T), and this, as well as the general behavior found in the cuprates, has prompted us to interpret our data as evidence for a vortex-glass to liquid transition in the FLL. The activation energies obtained can be fitted to a theory developed by Vinokur et al. Measurements with the magnetic field at an angle with the Cu-O planes may also be understood qualitatively within this framework.

Abstract Low temperature magnetic, transport and thermal measurements on the Ce(Pd1-xAgx) system, with x ranging from 0 to 0.17, are presented. The magnetic structure of the ordered phase transforms from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic with only 2at.% Pd substitution, whereas reentrance of ferromagnetism is observed at 15at.% Ag content. We propose the break in the periodicity of the Coulomb potential (Pd is a hole-like atom, whereas Ag is an electron-like one) as the dominant effect for such a change in the magnetic behavior of this system.

Abstract Flux lattice melting in (Bi-2212) single crystals has recently been studied by various techniques. In this contribution to the I. Schegolev Memorial Volume we review some experiments and compare their results. Muon-spin rotation and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) gave the first indications for an abrupt change of the flux lattice structure along a line in the B-T phase diagram. Experiments with Hall-sensor arrays proved that the flux line lattice experiences a first order phase transition (FOT) at this line. Measured as a function of field the resistance shows an abrupt kink at the FOT line and flux flow through narrow channels reveal a sudden drop of the shear modulus. Subsequent studies showed that the location of the FOT line in the phase diagram strongly depends on oxygen stoichiometry. For decreasing temperature the FOT line terminates at a critical point and continues into an almost field independent line which represents the location of a sharp peak in the magnetization (second peak). The second-peak line coincides with a crossover region in the low temperature range of the B-T diagram where both the muon spin rotation and SANS experiments reveal a transition from a lattice of flux lines to a lattice of pancake vortices. We compare our results with theoretical scenarios.

We propose a simple model that accounts for this behavior by including the effects of the pinning potential on the dynamics of vortices.
